Get to know the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA)
The SCRA, enacted in 2003, is a federal law that protects military members when they enter military service. Under SCRA guidelines, the interest rate on a servicemember’s financial obligations obtained prior to military service is capped at 6% during eligible periods of military service.
Since January 2015, we’ve capped interest rates at 5% for accounts held by servicemembers eligible for the SCRA benefit—no matter when you opened your account. We extend the SCRA benefit for an additional year after military service ends and don’t charge any fees on eligible accounts.
Under the SCRA, "military service" includes:
- Full-time, active duty members of the six military branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, and Coast Guard)
- Reservists on federal active duty
- Members of the National Guard on federal orders for a period of more than 30 days
The SCRA also includes:
- Servicemembers absent from duty for a lawful cause or because of sickness, wounds, or leave
- Commissioned officers in active service of the Public Health Service (PHS) or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
- Individuals who co-signed a loan for, or took out a loan with, a SCRA-eligible servicemember
You can access and read a copy of the SCRA. For additional information about the SCRA, we recommend contacting Military OneSource.
